Classic Records has proven to be an Audiophile Company second to none in the new millennium. But Classic Records, unlike other top Audiophile Companies, does not place Limited Edition numbers on their LP jackets.  Years ago, Classic Records changed their vinyl weight from 180 gram to 200 gram. Mymusicfix knows no expert that has been able to decipher a true difference in quality with this 20 gram weight increase. What this change did for Collectors of the finest vinyl pressings was establish a First Edition element to Classic Records Audiophile pressings. All Classic Records 180 Gram pressings are now Out of Print and Very Limited Edition Collector's First Edition Pressings. These First Editions have become some of the rarest pressings in the Audiophile Collector's Market. Just try to find them at any Audiophile Retailer. You might still find some limited inventory of M-F-S-L or DCC pressings but I will bet my bottom dollar that you won't be able to find all of these 180 gram Classic Records First Editions. They are simply gone from the market and Mymusicfix has seen these First Editions sell for over $300.In the long term, First Editions will be what Collectors seek.    With these 45 speed 4 LP Pressings (20 TITLES = 88 PIECES OF VINYL), Classic Records would limit these (known as the finest quality vinyl in existence) to 500 pieces in their 180 Gram First Editions. Some have never been re-pressed in 200 Gram. While other titles have been re-pressed in 200 Gram (1,000 piece pressings), the original 180 Gram sets were only 500 pieces worldwide and these will prove to be the true collectables in years to come. How rare and valuable are each one of these 180gram sets now still Factory Sealed? In 1957, right at the very start of his Prestige recording period, Trane did this one-off set in New Jersey with Rudy Van Gelder. The results are historic. Joining Coltrane's tenor are Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Kenny Drew at the piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Track Listings 1.   Blue Train 2.   Moment's Notice 3.   Locomotion 4.   I'm Old Fashioned 5.   Lazy Bird KENNY BURRELL - WEAVER OF DREAMS Kenny Burrell reaffirms the proposition that relaxed, smooth playing need not lack expression or energy. He's made restraint an art form. Burrell's simple, straightforward melody lines, elegant phrasing, and mellow tone are delightful and impressive. KENNY BURRELL Long sought after as well as a valued collector's item by jazz vocal aficionados, Weaver of Dreams features the smooth vocal stylings of well-known jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell. Burrell's voice is pleasant, his musicianship self-assured and his choice of tunes leave the listener in a romantic mood designed to last. Re-teaming with arranger and composer Gil Evans, who played such a pivotal role in Davis’ 1949 BIRTH OF THE COOL recordings, Davis recorded a series of large group albums beginning in the late ‘50s, including PORGY AND BESS, MILES AHEAD, and QUIET NIGHTS. SKETCHES OF SPAIN, with its emphasis on flamenco, rich orchestrations, and relaxed tempos, is certainly one of Davis’ most mellow recordings and proved to have broad appeal -- it is a mixture of Spanish classical scores and jazz melody. If you love Miles Davis and want something very relaxing and beautiful from him, this is a great album to own. Essential for Miles Davis fans. The third and final of the great Miles Davis-Gil Evans collaborations of 1957-59 was also their most ambitious. This set finds Davis in the forefront improvising on two numbers associated with Spanish music and three Evans compositions in that idiom. Much of the music is quite dramatic and emotional (notably Saeta) and plays at his best throughout, really stretching the boundaries of jazz. "Sketches of Spain was Miles' second-biggest hit: exquisite solos in front of Gil Evans' swooning orchestral arrangements. The sonics on Classic's 45rpm are jaw-dropping. Listen to the percussion, the harp, the horns, the air." - Fred Kaplan, The Absolute Sound, December 2005 (included in Kaplan's "Best-Sounding Jazz LPs") Track Listings 1.   Concierto De Aranjuez 2.   Will O' The Wisp 3.   The Pan Piper 4.   Saeta 5.   Solea SONNY CLARK - COOL STRUTTIN' - Sonny Clark A Blue Note catalog mainstay from its debut in 1958, this was another early 12 inch originally released as mono only. Now transferred from the first-generation two-track stereo masters, the quintet sound is wide-open and spacious. The phrase all star does not begin to describe this recording collective. Complementing Clark's piano are Art Farmer on trumpet, Jackie McLean handling alto, and a rhythm section consisting of Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones behind the drums. Track Listings 1.   Cool Struttin' 2.   Sippin' At Bells 3.   Blue Minor 4.   Deep Night TINA BROOKS - BACK TO THE TRACKS - TINA BROOKS Oh my. What a stable Blue Note had all those years ago. So many classics, so many players drifting in and out of each other's music. Turretine working for Grant Green who worked for Turrentine. Art Farmer and young Jackie McLean doubling up for classics such as Sonny Clark's Cool Struttin', and then Jackie showing up with Blue Mitchell for another classic, this one--Tina Brooks' Back to the Tracks. What happened? Why did Blue Note hold on to this for decades? Tina could write--his tunes swing with an overlay of blues, even an echo of gospel. McLean is loose on alto, although not as scorching as he gets in later years. Blue Mitchell goes strong on the trumpet, and Tina is in nobody's shadow as he works the tenor sax. Paul Chambers and Art Taylor lay down an insistent melody line, and everone else takes off from there, but noone goes so far away that the rhythm breaks down or the hooks fall apart. Three of the five pieces belong to Tina, and his melodies swing in that hard bop way. And those eight to ten minute tracks let everyone stretch out, work together, branch out on their own. Tragedy in Tina's life? Sure, but that's old news for jazz artists in the forties and fifties. Musically, Tina Brooks deserved a better fate. This is a classic, right up there with Morgan's "Sidewinder," Clark's "Cool Struttin,'" and Dexter Gordon's "Go."Better late than never, sure, but not for Tina Brooks.  This is one of those Blue Note Records that as Larry Cohn would say, should have come out in 1960 when it was recorded but not released, which was common for Blue Note. Tina on tenor sax is accompanied by Jackie McLean on alto sax, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Kenny Drew on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums doing tunes like "Back to the Tracks," "Street Singer" and "The Blues and I" all penned by Brooks as well as other tunes. The first issue of this recording was in Japan and it has only subsequently been issued in the U.S. in stereo and as such this constitutes the first Mono LP issue as it would have been if it had been put out in 1960. This first U.S. Blue Note Mono issue on LP has been faithfully reproduced and transferred from the original full-track Mono master tapes on Classic's all-tube, Mono cutting system. Track Listings 1.   Back to the Tracks 2.   Street Singer 3.   The Blues and I 4.   For Heaven's Sake 5.   The Ruby and the Pearl COLEMAN HAWKINS - ALIVE AT VILLAGE GATE - Memorable live set from Coleman Hawkins with a quartet featuring Tommy Flanagan on piano and produced by Creed Taylor. Vinyl Pressing HQ 180 Track Listings 1.   All the Things you are 2.   Joshua Fit the Battle of Jerico 3.   Mack the Knife 4.   Talk of the Town ILLINOIS JACQUET - SELF TITLED WITH KENNY BURRELL - ILLINOIS JACQUET This self-titled album from 1962 continues our reissue series from the Epic Jazz Stereorama catalog. Transferred from the 3-track masters, it finds Jacquet's tenor fronting an all-star band featuring Roy Eldridge, Leo Parker, Kenny Burrell, Cecil Payne & Jo Jones. This is a stripped down recording by comparison with most other 70's pop albums but then this record started out as a folk album that quickly crossed over and became a success for Lou Adler's Ode Record label. The original pressings of this album were cut by Bernie Grundman from the same original two-track master used when Bernie remastered the album this time — all other LP issues (including the CBS 1/2 speed master) were cut from eq copy tapes! Track Listings 1.   I Feel the Earth Move Under My Feet 2.   So Far Away 3.   It's Too Late 4.   Home Again 5.   Beautiful 6.   Way Over Yonder 7.   You've Got A Friend 8.   Where You Lead 9.   Will you Love Me Tomorrow? 10.   Smackwater Jack 11.   Tapestry 12.   (You make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman SIMON & GARFUNKEL - BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER - This recording topped the charts for 10 weeks, sold more than five million copies in the U.S. alone, won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year and includes four hit singles: "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "The Boxer", "Cecilia" and "So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright." Track Listings 1.   Bridge Over Troubled Water 2.   El Condor Pasa 3.   Cecillia 4.   Keep The Customer Satisfied 5.   So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright 6.   The Boxer 7.   Baby Driver 8.   The Only Living Boy in New York 9.   Why Don't You Write 10.   Bye Bye Love 11.   Song For the Asking BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB - 8LP BOX SET - LAST COPY - This wonderful surprise from Havana is now available, under an exclusive worldwide license from World Circut / Nonsuch, on 180 gram vinyl! The discs are mastered directly from the original analog tapes by Bernie Grundman (who mastered the original CD) under the supervision of the project producer, Ry Cooder. An international phenomenon upon its release in late 1997 (with second volume in the works as we speak) these sessions feature some of the greatest Cuban musicians ever in a historical recording event. Most have never been heard outside their native land, many are sexagenarians but the magic that came together on these tapes shows no age. Featuring the energizing-legend on piano: Ruben Gonzalez, plus over a dozen other great musicians and singers including Cooder. Track Listings 1.   Chan Chan 2.   De Camino a La Vereda 3.   El Cuarto de Tula 4.   Pueblo Nuevo 5.   Dos Gardemoas 6.   ?Y Tu Que Jas Hecho? 7.   Veinte Anos 8.   El CArretero 9.   Candela 10.   Amor de Loca Juventud 11.   Orgullecida 12.   Murmullo 13.   Buena Vista Social Club 14.   La Bayamesa LOU DONALDSON - LOU TAKES OFF - Altoist Lou Donaldson, who tends to get lost in the Blue Note all-star shuffle (even after making over twenty LPs for the label) is in his prime with this jam. Admiring the approach of Charlie Parker and Johnny Hodges, Donaldson combined the late 1945-55 bop alto scene with a heavy dose of r&b to come into his own. Originally released in 1959, one full year after the mono version, this set riffs on the space-race-craze, which was in full swing. Track Listings 1.   Sputnik 2.   Dewey Square 3.   Strollin' In 4.   Groovin' High LOUIS ARMSTRONG - I'VE GOT LIFE BY A STRING - TREMENDOUSLY RARE PRESSING Track Listings  1. We'll Be Together Again     8. I've Got the World on a String     9. Do Nothin' Till You Hear from Me     10. I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues WILLIE NELSON - STARDUST - The record label didn't want Nelson to do this project, inspired partially by the death of pop crooner Bing Crosby. Standard material - Moonlight in Vermont, All of Me, Don't Get Around Much Anymore - is arranged by Booker T. Jones of Green Onions fame and recorded in Nelson's inimitable style in Emmylou Harris' house. Track Listings 1.   Stardust 2.   Georgia On My Mind 3.   Blue Skies 4.   All of Me 5.   Unchained Melody 6.   September Song 7.   On The Sunny Side Of The Street 8.   Moonlight in Vermont 9.   Dont Get Around Much Anymore 10.   Someone to Watch Over Me BILLIE HOLIDAY - LADY IN SATIN (LAST COPY) - Impressed by arrangements she had heard by Ray Ellis, Holiday cut this album for Columbia in 1959. The results are a very smooth, velvety set of tunes that go down like a twelve year old single-malt Scotch. Track Listings 1.   I'm A Fool To Want You 2.   For Heaven's Sake 3.   You Don't Know What Love Is 4.   I Get Along Without You Very Well 5.   For All We Know 6.   Violets for Your Furs 7.   You've Changed 8.   It's Easy to Remember 9.   But Beautiful 10.   Glad to Be Unhappy 11.   I'll Be Around ANN ARBOR BLUES & JAZZ FESTIVAL 8LP BOX SET - LAST COPY - Hands down, one of the greatest festival recordings ever. Featuring the sultry voice of Margo Timmins, the precise musicianship of her brothers Peter (on drums) and Michael (on guitar), and bassist Alan Anton, The Trinity Sessions is a spare, evocative, countrified-rock classic. Their inspired reworking of both "Blue Moon" and "Working On A Building" reveal the Timmins family to be talented interpreters and insightful neo-traditionalists. Mixing the ambitious songwriting of Margo and Michael Timmins with subdued covers of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane" and Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," The Trinity Sessions is an exquisite collection that holds up quite well under repeated listenings.  SONNY ROLLINS - OUR MAN IN JAZZ (SOLD OUT AND NO LONGER APART OF THIS LISTING) - Sonny Rollins Live at the Village Gate in New York playing with the greats - Bob Crenshaw on Bass - Don Cherry on Cornet - Billy Higgins on Drums - Paul Goodman, the Recording Engineer, captures a recording directly to Three-Track Tapes that will make you feel like you are in the audience for this outstanding performance. Another great George Avakian and Bob Prince production. Our Man In Jazz, a live recording that is very spontaneous but it's still accessible with classic RCA sound. Track Listings 1.   Oleo 2.   Dearly Beloved - Doxy JOHNNY HODGES - BLUES A PLENTY - Perhaps Jazz’s most poignant instrumental lyricist, Johnny Hodges Alto Sax solos are stunning and beautiful and evocative in the finest Blues sense. He had the same knack as Count Basie for knowing what to play and when to play it. His swing and expressiveness were unmatched. Hodges achieved greatness without having his own forum much of his career. Tracks are I DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT YOU - COOL YOUR MOTOR - GONE WITH THE WIND - HONEY HILL - BLUES A PLENTY - DON’T TAKE YOUR LOVE FROM ME - SATURDAY AFTERNOON BLUES - SATIN DOLL - REELING & ROCKING. These 180 gram pressings are the only way to verify that it's a 1st edition Collectors find from Classic Records mastered on a high-definition Virgin Vinyl pressing for superior fidelity. The nicest thing you can do for your stylus and your ears. The ultimate record -- the way music was meant to be heard and of superior quality for any Audiophile. And of course cutting at 45 speed is the audiophile choice for the highes quality. A 45-RPM record is sonically superior to a 33 1/3 variety because of a 35 percent reduction of groove curvature compared to a 33 1/3 cut.. It means that while you can't fit as much music into a 45, the undukations of the groove that your cartridge has to track are stretched over a longer distance. For these reissues, the music was displaced onto four sides, meaning each side contains about 10 minutes of music. The only way you'll get closer to this classic music is to listen to the master tapes or have been in the studio with the artist originally during the actual session. You will be one of the last people in the world to own this 1st Edition Masterpiece. There have been so few vinyl LPs produced over the last 5 years that you should never pass up the opportunity to upgrade your collection. They're each very limited in their pressings and disappear with extraordinary quickness from the vinyl market. This causes prices to skyrocket because once they are gone, they are gone forever! Don't second-guess yourself with this chance to upgrade your collection because before you know it, the opportunity will have passed forever.
