Description
EXCELLO Records Lp #8002, original first pressing mono LP. Orange Excello labels, with 'deep groove'. THIS IS A GREAT and RARE LP, on the borderline of blues and R&B; and a precursor of soul. Info on it is available in many places, but suffice to say that though Roscoe didn't get many chances to cut records, on the strength of this, he should have! Tracks: Are You Sure / Think It Over / Pleadin' For Love / I Was Wrong! Played With Love / I've Been Faithful / Say You Really Care / Its All My Fault / Something's Wrong / Baby Look What You're Doin' To Me / Miss You So / Is It Too Late / Let Me Believe In You I obtained this record quite a while ago, from the library of WBLK, the 'Black music' station started, managed and owned by George 'Hound Dog' Lorenz (if you don't know, ask somebody!) after he left WKBW. In essence, you could say that this was 'his' record - and maybe one he played on the air - as I found his handwriting on some of the other records that came with it. Therefore, although to some people the radio station writing will detract from the item, to those with fond memories of The Hound' and an interest in the early days of Rock 'N' Roll, the markings WON'T detract as they are part of the history of the piece. Cover: radio catalog numbers in marker front and back. Station Call letters stamped on back (front too, but almost invisible). Good seams and spine, no splits, almost no wear whatsoever. Print on spine fully legible and not 'worn'. Back has very little wear or dirt, esp for a white cover. Front has one spot of wear on the center (by his nose); odd; don't know how it could have happened. Labels are NM- due to a spindle trail on each side. WBLK stamped one side but, again, not highly visible. Record: Excello generally used low quality vinyl. Having said that, in that regard, this one is superb (I'd call it NM). Vinyl looks pretty much like high-quality materail (hence the LP SOUNDS great). As for wear, it looks like the LP was only played a couple times, though handled with less-than-adequate care; so there are a couple very light top-of-the-groove-only scuff lines. This lends credence to my theory that this was played only by a DJ (maybe on the air, maybe a quick sample by the head honcho) as the scuffs seem to be part of the spindle trail.... just what a careless DJ would do if juggling the record with one hand. There is also one paper impression where the inner sleeve had a folded corner. As for wear, I'd give this LP a strict NM- but considering the high quality of the vinyl and the usual condition of blues LPs from this period (especially Excello LPs) most dealers would give it a NM, I think. HERE'S THE RUB: although the vinyl looks almost perfect, the last track on Side One has a skip. It's almost impossible to see but on a very close inspection there's a concentric line that acts like a scratch (but I think it's actually a pressing flaw) and makes a skip. Maybe it could be fixed. MAYBE it wouldn't skip for you, though it skipped for me on two different turntables. I can tell you it was heartbreaking to find it, and really surprising, as it's not a visible flaw. Anyway, I have no idea what it's worth. A copy described as NM vinyl with a 'nice' cover sold for $1635 on eBay in 2007, though copies have sold for less. Here I have a copy with cover and labels in excellent shape; unusually high-quality vinyl with superb sound; no wear; but one SKIP. So.... ?
